Termoneeny host 32 marathon challenge runner Alex O’Shea

Termoneeny RC had a very busy week both near and far. We had a running fireman, local 10k and 5k runs but the highlight of the weekend for many, was The Great North Run on Sunday.

Alex O’Shea “The Running Fireman”

On Thursday afternoon TRC welcomed Alex O’Shea and Ollie, for the Derry leg of their 32 Marathon challenge for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Alex embarked upon the challenge of running 32 marathons in 32 counties in 16 days. That’s equates to running two marathons a day! This was certainly a memorable night for all. TRC members marked out a course for him in Lavey. Many TRC members joined Alex with some completing the full 26.2 miles and others completing a leg of it.  It was a wonderful sight, watching and cheering the large crowd of runners as they made their way back to Lavey Club as Alex finished the 26.2 miles. Alex was very thankful for the fantastic support he received from TRC. Many thanks to Walshes Hotel, Maghera for supplying Alex and Ollie with a meal upon completing their Derry leg of this challenge.

Glen 10k and 5k.

Twelve members of TRC made their way to Maghera on Friday night to take part in Glen 10k and 5k.  Tara Montgomery continued her excellent running form at the minute, snatching the first female title. Ray Keenan also impressed on Friday evening claiming a third male podium position. It was a welcome return to racing for Robbie Maguire on Friday evening too. Well done everyone,  fantastic times.

His sister in law Carmel and his brother Joe tackled the 10k. Carmel was first across the line a great time of 54:25 and Joe was hot on Carmel’s heels finishing in 55:25. Well done to all “The Dillons” on Saturday.

Shauna was first TRC member across the line in a fantastic time of 50:35 and Denise was second TRC home in a brilliant time of 57:46. Edel ran the 5k, crossing the line in a great time of 30:25.

The Great North Run

Massive congratulations go to the TRC members who travelled to Newcastle to take part in the prestigious Great North Run. More than 50,000 runners pounded the streets from Newcastle Central Motorway to the sea front at South Shields. The Great North Run is a celebration of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. This year, this race was a celebration of everyday heroes. People who give back to their communities and inspire those around them with their dedication and perseverance. This epitomises our members who selflessly ran the half marathon distance for their chosen charities. Declan and Emma Leung who ran for Cancer Focus. Maeve Curley, Pauline Quinn and friends chosen charity was The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation. Both excellent charities that do so much to support families and those who are ill. This race was challenging for all with the toughest mile of all at mile 12, a steady climb all the way before a steep downhill section onto the seafront. The warm and humid temperatures added another obstacle. Nevertheless, everyone preserved and grinded out excellent times. A memorable day for all. Declan Leung did not let running a mere 26.2 miles with Alex on Thursday evening, prevent him from running a fantastic time of 1:47:44 and his wife Emma achieved a new personal best. Well done to each and every one of you, we are extremely proud to have you as members of TRC.

Results: Declan Leung 1:47:44; Maeve Curley 2:21:52; Emma Leung 2:30:16 PB and Pauline O’Kane 2:36:49.

Congratulations to all the TRC members who represent our running club near and far. It is wonderful to see the orange and white running top at so many events.
