It was a memorable and fun-filled week for Termoneeny Running Club. Alongside members partaking in festive fixtures, milestones and podium finishes were also accomplished.
For many, running one marathon is a worthy lifetime ambition but Christian Fortes O’Neill achieved something extraordinary on Saturday morning by completing his 50th marathon. Eight years after his first marathon in Belfast, Christian decided that Lanzarote, being close to his Spanish birthplace, would be a special place for his 50th. The sweltering temperature of 24˚C was difficult enough to endure on its own but further challenges presented themselves in the forms of an undulating course and a persistent headwind for the final ten miles. Christian was determined to enjoy the experience and still finished in a fantastic time of 4 hours and 12 minutes. Christian has completed several international marathons but this one in Lanzarote is a race he will always remember. Running 50 marathons before his 30th birthday is, without doubt, an achievement that Christian should be incredibly proud of and TRC look forward to celebrating the next 50 marathons with him.
Three members travelled to Eskra on Saturday for the 9th annual Rudolph Run which continues to grow in popularity each year. They all ran the 10k route and delivered excellent performances.
Results: Michael Burke 43:10; Damian O’Boyle 47:12; Tom Halferty 69:47
Anne Breen obtained a brilliant new course personal best at Ecos with a time of 33:03 and has now completed 23 parkruns. This is great commitment from Anne to the parkrun community.
Upperlands Santa Run
Great fun was had at the Santa Fun Run 5k in Upperlands on Saturday morning. Four TRC members donned their Santa suits and thoroughly enjoyed this jovial event. The club is delighted to report that Thomas Doherty won the race and Jacqueline McGonigle, accompanied by her dog Bobby, was the first female. Gary O’Doherty and Anne O’Doherty’s son finished in second place. Well done to all the members, Thomas, Gary, Jacqueline and Norman who took part in this race.
Tommy Hughes displayed outstanding running at the Zurich Malaga Marathon on Sunday. He completed the race in an incredible time of 2:28:33 and was extremely close to breaking the Irish record for his age category. This result placed Tommy in 27th place out of a field of 2407 runners and he was first in his age category. Tommy is an inspiration to all runners and continues to awe with his performances. The club is very proud of how Tommy continues to distinguish himself among other elite athletes.
Michelle Comer, a TRC member, organised a 10k/5k race on Sunday to raise funds for School Aid Romania. It was a very enjoyable event because not only was the route very scenic, despite an arduous ascent, but the hospitality was also excellent. Appreciation is forwarded to Michelle and everyone else who was involved in the successful organisation of this event. Terrific running was also exhibited by the four TRC members who were in attendance and took part in the 5k.
Results: Declan Leung 23:22 (5th place); Sean Smith 24:57 (8th place); Clodagh Gallagher & Jacqueline McGonigle (41:13).
Congratulations to all the TRC members who represent the club so well throughout the country and farther afield. If you are interested in joining Termoneeny RC please visit termoneenyrc.com or send us a message on facebook.
