From the Bann to Berlin, Termoneeny Running Club certainly made an impact this week on the local and international running scene.
Run ‘n the Bann
Thursday evening saw the 19th Gig ‘n the Bann festival kick off with a horde of eager athletes assembled on Portglenone Main Street for its popular Run ‘n the Bann 5k. Although the rain was heavy and relentless, TRC members still turned out in force and ran brilliantly. One of the performances of the night was delivered by Jarlath Hughes, who not only claimed third place, but also secured a new personal best in a blink-and-you-miss-him time of 16:32. This was a well deserved reward for such a dedicated and skilful young athlete. More fantastic running was displayed by Charlie Curley, son of members Maeve and Dara Curley. Charlie was presented with the prize for first junior but he also was among the leading group of senior runners around the course. Orla Hatt was the first TRC lady home in a fantastic time of 21:30, making this a new personal best for her. Everyone from TRC had impressive performances and enjoyed this lovely annual event.
Jarlath Hughes 16:32 (3rd place & PB); Charlie Curley 17:57 (1st junior); Michael Burke 19:31; Eamonn Melaugh 20:32 PB; Dara Curley 21:03; Orla Hatt 21:30 PB; Declan Leung 21:46; Shauna Melaugh 23:52; Sean Smith 24:44; Denise Martin 25:41; Leona Martin 25:41; Kevin McErlean 25:52; Gerard Henry 25:57; Francis Halferty 26:25; Edel Mulholland 29:31; Susan Duggan 29:55; Jacqueline McGonigle 31:06; Tom Halferty 31:21
Tafelta 10 Mile Road Race
Neighbouring running club Tafelta hosted their inaugural 10 mile road race on Saturday and it proved to be a big success. The course, which took runners through and around Magherafelt, was relatively flat with only a few challenging parts and the TRC representatives who participated in this event greatly enjoyed it. Michael Burke was the first TRC member home and Kerry Evans continued her excellent running form by picking up a prize in her age category. Kerry’s sister, Tara Montgomery, had a super result for her first 10 mile race and great running was exhibited by all TRC members.
Results: Michael Burke 1:10:18; Damian O’Boyle 1:17:24; Kerry Evans 1:21:39 (1st in age category); Tara Montgomery 1:29:03 (1st 10 mile race); Clodagh Gallagher 1:59:23
David O’Brien Challenge
The 10th Anniversary of the David O’Brien Challenge did not disappoint and eight TRC runners headed to Davagh Forest for this tough but unique course. Participants could choose between two different distances of 5 miles and 26k. Climbing the notorious Widow Maker hill on this route was not easy but the laborious ascent was well-rewarded with sweeping declines afterwards. It was an extremely well organised event and appreciation is forwarded to David O’Brien and Christine for his warm hospitality. Results will be posted on facebook as soon as they are available.
Well done to Kevin McErlean who ran MUSA parkrun on Saturday morning in a terrific time of 26:12.
Running a 5k entirely on sand is not easy but Tracey Paul managed this with ease and finished Portrush parkrun with a great result of 29:37.
The world record was broken at Berlin Marathon on Sunday by Eliud Kipchoge and the club’s very own marathon man, Christian Fortes O’Neill, was among this crowd of international runners as he completed his 45th marathon. This was Christian’s second time running the popular Berlin marathon course and the temperature soared to 25 ˚C, making it more difficult to run 26.2 miles. Christian took a break from running after the Energia 24 Hour Challenge in June to make sure he would be injury free for this event. He was not looking to break any records himself, his main aim was to enjoy the run without experiencing any pain, but was surprised and delighted when he managed to finish it in under four hours with a brilliant time of 3:53:03. This was a tremendous result for Christian and the club is pleased to see him back and running so well.
Congratulations to all the TRC members who represent the club so well throughout the country and farther afield. If you are interested in joining Termoneeny RC please visit termoneenyrc.com or send us a message on facebook.
